To determine which of three treatments — infliximab, azathioprine, or a combination of both agents — is superior for patients with Crohn disease, investigators conducted an industry-supported, randomized, double-blind trial involving patients with moderate-to-severe disease who had not received previous immunosuppressive or biologic therapy. Patients were corticosteroid dependent, were being considered for a second course of systemic corticosteroids within 12 months of the first, or had not responded to ≥4 weeks of mesalamine or budesonide.
