The histological profile of flat colorectal adenomas, despite their distinct morphology, is probably no worse than that of polypoid adenomas. However, flat lesions are more difficult to detect. To determine whether smoking and other factors are associated with risk for flat adenomas in the colon, investigators prospectively studied 600 asymptomatic patients (313 nonsmokers, 115 heavy smokers, and 172 low-exposure smokers) who underwent screening colonoscopy with a high-definition colonoscope by a single individual.
