Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) revolutionized the treatment of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Although PPIs are effective for erosive esophagitis, complete symptomatic resolution of heartburn and regurgitation occurs in only an estimated 40% to 60% of treated patients.
