Some studies have suggested that a low-fiber diet on the day before colonoscopy, at least for breakfast and perhaps for lunch, improves the tolerability and even the efficacy of colonoscopy preparation compared with results attained with clear-liquid diets. Even so, most of us cling to prescribing clear liquids.
To compare the effects of fiber-free versus clear-liquid diets during bowel preparation, researchers in Lebanon randomized 200 patients (mean age, 56.1; range 18–82) undergoing colonoscopy to adhere to either diet (see the table) plus consume 4 L of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution (PEG-ES) the day before the procedure.
