Published guidelines define the standard of care for management of cirrhosis yet lack explicit measurements for quality assessment in clinical settings. The development of quality indicators (QIs) to monitor and track quality of care could lay the groundwork for continuous quality improvement efforts in the treatment of cirrhosis.
An expert panel of 11 gastroenterologists and hepatologists reviewed a set of candidate QIs and a comprehensive summary of published research linking the QIs to outcomes. Using a modified Delphi method, panelists systematically rated QIs on a standard nine-point RAND appropriateness scale and used an iterative process of discussion to narrow the list.
