For afternoon colonoscopies, higher failure rates for bowel preparation occur when patients prep the evening before. Split-dose bowel preparations effectively improve the quality of any bowel preparation but especially for procedures later in the day. In a recent study, giving an entire 2-L preparation on the day of the procedure resulted in bowel preparation quality that was equal to split dosing and caused less disruption of the workday prior to the day of colonoscopy (JW Gastroenterol Oct 1 2010). Now, two additional studies have evaluated preparation given entirely on the same day for afternoon colonoscopies.
