Among hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients, most morbidity and mortality occurs after cirrhosis develops. However, patients with HCV-related cirrhosis show poor therapeutic response and reduced tolerance to therapy. Which factors predict sustained virologic response (SVR) in these patients, and does achieving SVR improve outcomes?
To answer these questions, researchers conducted a multicenter, retrospective, cohort study of 568 patients in Spain who received peginterferon and ribavirin for HCV-associated cirrhosis. Patients with Child-Pugh scores >6 were excluded. The disease events that were analyzed included ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, variceal hemorrhage, hepatocellular carcinoma, liver transplantation, and death.
