The administration of propofol by trained registered nurses supervised by endoscopists proved to be one of the most contentious issues in gastroenterology in the U.S. during the past decade. The controversy was mostly extinguished by a December 2009 policy issued by the U.S. Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services that disallowed the practice in hospitals (although it continues in some). Now, several medical societies in Europe have produced an evidence- and consensus-based set of guidelines for nonanesthesiologists to administer propofol for gastrointestinal endoscopy.
