Variable Detection of Serrated Colorectal Lesions

The variable detection of adenomas by endoscopists in the same practice groups has been documented in numerous studies. In contrast, the variable detection of serrated polyps — which are harder to identify but also important precursors to colorectal cancer — has received minimal study.

To estimate the prevalence of serrated polyps and the variability in their detection, investigators retrospectively evaluated data on 4535 polyps from 7192 average-risk screening colonoscopies performed at a single urban medical center from 2006 through 2008. Serrated polyps were classified as hyperplastic polyp (HP), sessile serrated adenoma (SSA), or dysplastic serrated polyp (DSP).
