U.S. guidelines generally recommend that patients who undergo full colorectal cancer (CRC) screening examination (typically colonoscopy) can forgo annual fecal occult blood testing because of its low positive predictive value. However, two small studies (Gut 2005; 54:803 and Colorectal Dis 2003; 5:45) suggest that annual fecal immunochemical testing (FIT), a type of fecal occult blood testing, might be an effective adjunct to colonoscopy screening.
