Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common symptom complex that adversely affects quality of life (QOL). To identify characteristics that might contribute to impaired QOL, researchers studied 259 patients at a tertiary care center in Belgium who were recently diagnosed with FD.
Participants completed validated questionnaires that measured psychosocial factors and health-related QOL. They also underwent sensory motor-function testing and gastric-emptying studies.
Mean physical and mental composite scores were slightly lower for study participants compared with population norms. In multivariable analyses, somatic symptoms (somatization) and chronic fatigue were significantly associated with impaired physical QOL. Anxiety proneness, alexithymia, depr…
