Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and Helicobacter pylori infection are common in China, but epidemiological details are lacking. To characterize the prevalence of these conditions, investigators randomly selected 3600 residents of Shanghai (age range, 18–80) who were part of a larger epidemiology study. Of this group, 1022 qualified participants completed validated questionnaires, provided blood samples for H. pylori antibody testing, and agreed to undergo endoscopy.
Among these participants, 176 (17.2%) had PUD: 62 had gastric ulcers, and 136 had duodenal ulcers. The prevalence of H. pylori infection was 73.3% among all 3153 survey respondents and 92.6% among those with PUD. H. pylori infection was independently associated with increased risk for…
