Advances in endoscopic and pharmacologic therapy have reduced the risk for rebleeding in patients with nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB); however, mortality remains relatively unchanged.
To determine the contributors to poor clinical outcomes (persistent/recurrent bleeding or death within 30 days), investigators conducted an industry-sponsored, retrospective cohort study of 2664 patients (mean age, 66.7; 64.7% men) who presented with UGIB (outpatient or inpatient) to any of 123 participating centers in seven European countries during a 2-month period in 2008.
