Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the common causes of liver disease. In many cases, identifying fatty infiltration on imaging and excluding other types of chronic liver disease clinch the diagnosis of NAFLD. However, a biopsy is usually needed to determine the degree of liver injury. Inflammatory stimuli and oxidative stress are believed to contribute to much of the liver injury in patients with NAFLD. Because ferritin is upregulated in this setting, it is plausible that elevated serum ferritin levels might reflect increased severity of NAFLD.
