With the ever-increasing shortage of organs, live donor liver transplantation has become a life-saving alternative to deceased donor liver transplantation. One of the main limitations of live donor liver transplantation is risk to the donor, who must be extremely healthy to qualify. Nonetheless, in two recent, highly publicized cases, the donors died. Now, researchers have examined the risk for early donor death and have compared long-term mortality between donors and healthy matched controls.
