Unbeknown to most clinicians, serum tests for colorectal cancer screening are now commercially available; fecal DNA tests have been commercially available since 2003. Thus far, neither serum tests nor stool tests for abnormal DNA have seen much use for screening in the U.S. The tests' performance characteristics have been less then optimal, particularly when their cost is considered. Nevertheless, the theoretical promise of efficacy has led to continued investigation and refinement of technology for stool DNA testing, and the potential for enhanced adherence has given rise to several companies that have developed or are developing molecular serum assays.
