Transnasal vs. Standard Endoscopy: Similar in Detecting Barrett Esophagus

These promising findings for unsedated transnasal endoscopy should be validated outside of a tertiary care environment.

Despite recent findings supporting the tolerability and safety of unsedated transnasal endoscopy (TNE) (JW Gastroenterol Jun 8 2012), data comparing its diagnostic accuracy with that of standard sedated endoscopy (SE) have been limited and variable.

To compare endoscopic detection of Barrett esophagus (BE) using TNE versus SE, investigators randomized 46 patients with no prior endoscopy and 49 patients with established BE to undergo TNE or SE.
