Peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB) is the most common cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and is mostly linked to Helicobacter pylori infection and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use. However, in patients with cirrhosis, the etiology of PUB is unclear.
To identify the causes and outcomes of PUB in patients with and without cirrhosis, researchers evaluated 203 patients with PUB who were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary care center in France. Of these patients, 29 had cirrhosis caused almost exclusively by excessive alcohol consumption; these patients were younger than those without cirrhosis (mean age, 55.0 vs. 63.8; P=0.009).
