The use of scheduled repeat endoscopy for patients with novariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) after endoscopic hemostasis is a matter of debate. To evaluate the effectiveness of this practice, investigators performed a meta-analysis of studies that randomized patients to undergo second-look endoscopy (SLE) or receive alternative therapy after successful endoscopic therapy for acute UGIB. A literature review of 577 studies and abstracts identified only four studies and four abstracts that met the inclusion criteria and included a total of 938 patients.
Analysis of these data suggests that SLE reduced risks for rebleeding (the primary outcome; odds ratio, 0.55; 95% confidence interval, 0.37–0.81) and surgery (OR, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.19…
