Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a frequent complication of cirrhosis and is associated with hepatic decompensation. Previous studies suggest that anticoagulation therapy for acute PVT can result in complete recanalization in patients with cirrhosis (JW Gastroenterol Jul 27 2012). However, no study has evaluated the efficacy of anticoagulation in preventing PVT in this patient population.
