Previous studies suggest that incomplete polypectomy contributes to a small but significant fraction of cancers that develop after colonoscopy. We know that in 10% to 50% of piecemeal removals of large sessile polyps, residual polyp is found on follow-up examination months later. In the current prospective cohort study, investigators evaluate factors associated with incomplete resection of 5 mm to 20 mm sessile polyps.
Among 269 patients (mean age, 63.4; 84% men), 346 neoplastic polyps were removed by 11 gastroenterologists. After removal, biopsies were collected in four quadrants around the polypectomy site.
