Going to Meetings Improves Adenoma Detection

Few determinants of adenoma detection rate are established. In the current study, investigators examined factors associated with 12,134 consecutive screening colonoscopies performed by 21 colonoscopists in private practice in Berlin.

The adenoma detection rate among colonoscopists ranged from 7.5% to 33.3%, with a mean of 21.7%. Withdrawal times in patients without polyps ranged from 6 to 11 minutes, except for one outlier at 17 minutes. Within that timeframe, withdrawal time was not associated with adenoma detection rate. Consistent with previous studies, older age and male gender were each associated with a higher likelihood of adenoma detection.
