End-stage renal disease (ESRD) has been associated with an increased risk for rebleeding in patients with peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB; JW Gastroenterol Sep 30 2011 and JW Gastroenterol Feb 5 2010). To investigate the relationship between ESRD and inpatient mortality and length of stay in patients with PUB, researchers conducted a cross-sectional study using a large database of U.S. hospital discharges.
Investigators identified 105,525 patients with a primary discharge diagnosis of PUB confirmed by endoscopy, including 3272 patients with a secondary diagnosis of ESRD and 3177 patients with a secondary diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
