Most studies of new antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) add the new treatment to standard AEDs in patients with very frequent seizures. This manufacturer-supported study compared the efficacy and tolerability of lamotrigine (LTG) versus phenytoin (PHT) in a more typical clinical population. One hundred eighty-one previously untreated adolescents and adults who had at least two seizures (partial, secondarily generalized, and/or primary generalized tonic-clonic) within the previous six months were randomized to either LTG or PHT for 48 weeks.
