Neuropathic pain encompasses various disorders resulting from an injury or disease of the peripheral or central nervous system, including painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Gabapentin has been one of the most widely used medications for PDN and PHN. Opioids have also been used successfully for neuropathic pain, but many clinicians are concerned about escalating doses and issues surrounding the dispensing of large doses of opioids.
