In this prospective study of patients with essential tremor, the authors aimed to determine which demographic characteristics, if any, predicted the rate of disease progression.
Out of a population of 128 consecutive patients with essential tremor seen at one clinic, 46 had at least one follow-up examination (mean follow-up time, 3.6 years) in which the Tremor Rating Scale (TRS) was the primary evaluation tool. Recorded demographic characteristics included sex; handedness; family history of essential tremor, any neurodegenerative or motor neuron disorder, or depression; head or voice involvement; location of tremor onset; ethanol responsivity; use of drugs for movement disorders; asymmetric-tremor ratings; and baseline total TRS scores.
