Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is an undertreated problem. It confers a high risk for subsequent ischemic stroke, with the highest risk (up to 5%) occurring within the first 2 days following the initial event. Barriers to optimal treatment include underrecognition, as the symptoms are transient and may be difficult to distinguish from symptoms of other neurologic disorders (e.g., migraines and seizures). Underrecognition and the difficulty of identifying the TIA patients at highest risk for early stroke have led to inconsistent approaches to TIA management.
