Long-term vitamin E intake may mitigate the effects of oxidative stress in the brain, but its effects on cognition are poorly understood. The Women's Health Study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of vitamin E supplementation (600 IU every other day) and low-dose aspirin (100 mg every other day) for preventing cardiovascular disease and cancer in women. In this WHS substudy, started a mean of 5.6 years after randomization, 3184 vitamin E recipients and 3193 placebo recipients completed five cognitive tests on three occasions (every 2 years from 1998 through 2002).
