The Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (ONTT) found that regardless of treatment, visual acuity improved significantly in most patients with optic neuritis by 1 year, enabling physicians to predict substantial recovery. However, a small proportion of patients (5%) were left with a moderate-to-severe loss of visual function. Although the few patients with severe visual loss (visual acuity, ≤20/200) at baseline had a greater chance of poor vision at 6 months, this pool was too small to be useful for clinical trials aiming to show a treatment effect for novel therapies.
