The Mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce risk for Alzheimer disease (AD). These researchers assessed the effect of this diet on mortality among 192 elderly, community-dwelling people with AD (mean age, 83). The investigators visited participants in their homes every 18 months, conducted neurologic and cognitive tests, and assessed their dietary habits.
During a mean follow-up of 4.4 years, 85 participants died. After adjustment for potential confounders, adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet (measured on a 10-point scale) was associated with significantly lower mortality (hazard ratio, 0.76).
