The metabolic syndrome, a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors for atherosclerosis, is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease and has been implicated as a potential risk factor for stroke. Leukoaraiosis — attenuation of cerebral white matter, visible on neuroimaging studies — is an intermediate stage of ischemic brain damage often associated with subcortical ischemic stroke. In a cross-sectional study of 1030 healthy Japanese subjects (age range, 28–78), researchers examined the relation between metabolic syndrome and leukoaraiosis.
