This article constitutes an update to a 1996 practice parameter on neuroimaging performed as part of an emergency evaluation for seizures (Neurology 1996; 47:288). The expert panel conducted an evidence-based review of 15 articles, mostly case series involving CT. They organized the review around five questions, the first four concerning the likelihood that CT findings would alter management in different populations and the fifth relating to patient factors associated with an abnormal finding.
For first seizures, the evidence showed that CT findings affected management in 9% to 17% of adults and 3% to 8% of children. Therefore, the authors recommend considering CT for patients with first seizures (level C evidence, possibly effective in guid…
