This study addressed a thorny issue about combat traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly TBI linked to an explosion: Why do soldiers with TBI have more lingering consequences than civilians have? Researchers used questionnaires to identify combat-related injuries and current physical and mental health in 2525 soldiers who had returned from deployment in Iraq 3 to 4 months before the study.
About 15% of respondents reported having mild TBI (concussion) with at least one brief episode of loss or alteration in consciousness. TBI was usually caused by an explosion.
