In view of increasing interest in associations between hyperlipidemia and stroke, these authors analyzed the lipid profiles of 1049 patients admitted to a university medical center with stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). They compared levels of several lipid types in the 23.5% of patients with stroke or TIA due to large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA) and in those with stroke or TIA due to other causes (such as small-vessel disease).
Compared with the other patients, those with LAA had significantly higher levels of triglycerides and of non-HDL cholesterol. Levels of LDL cholesterol did not differ between the two groups.
