To examine the spectrum of congenital arterial and venous stroke syndromes and their outcomes, researchers assessed 59 children with presumed perinatal ischemic stroke, identified from a database. The authors used MRI findings to classify the stroke locations, paying special attention to periventricular venous infarction. They examined correlations between the MRI findings and outcomes (mean follow-up, 5.3 years).
Of the lesions identified, 93% were in middle cerebral artery areas. Most of these were deemed arterial infarctions, but periventricular venous infarction appeared to account for the lesion in 12 patients.
