Patients with epilepsy have higher risks for morbidity and mortality compared with the general population. Lack of seizure control is believed to be an important factor in this context; however, relevant well-designed studies are scarce. These authors addressed the association of adherence to antiepileptic drug (AED) prescriptions with mortality and morbidity. They retrospectively assessed data from more than 33,000 adults with epilepsy who were enrolled in the Medicaid program in three U.S. states (Florida, New Jersey, and Iowa) during the period from January 1997 through June 2006.
