Recovery of behavioral function after stroke is often limited and is unpredictable. Recovery may be enhanced by therapies designed to promote repair of the damaged brain or restoration of its function in patients with chronic stroke. These authors review reparative and restorative therapies and techniques to predict the likelihood and extent of therapeutic success. Included is an excellent review of approaches to assess the physiology of recovery in individual patients and factors to consider when determining whom to treat with a given approach, how soon after the stroke, at what intensity, and for how long.
