Mitochondrial defects have been studied intensively in numerous neurologic and nonneurologic disorders, ranging from rare mitochondrial encephalomyopathies (e.g., Leigh syndrome) to common neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Parkinson disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).
