Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are common in patients with small-vessel diseases of the brain, such as cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). In CAA, presence of CMBs is a marker of disease severity and might indicate increased risk for lobar intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). However, the importance of CMBs in community-dwelling elders is less extensively studied.
These authors examined the risk factors for and prevalence of CMBs in 1962 participants in the population-based Age Gene/Environment Susceptibility (AGES)-Reykjavik study (mean age, 76 years). Participants underwent gradient-echo MRI for CMB detection. The investigators analyzed vascular risk factors and APOE genotype.
