For many patients who present to neurology practices with mobility impairments or histories of falls, extensive clinical and laboratory workups often do little to identify specific diagnoses. In this multicenter European study, investigators examined how well age-related changes in cerebral white matter correlate with balance and gait dysfunction. Participants were 639 nondisabled adults (age range, 65–84) who underwent MRI because of neurologic symptoms or had incidental MRI findings of white-matter changes.
In multivariate analyses, the adjusted odds ratio for pathologic findings on a mobility screen (the Short Physical Performance Battery) was 2.29 for severe versus mild and 1.33 for moderate versus mild white-matter changes. Similar ORs …
