To investigate the sexual and contraceptive practices of 148 women with epilepsy (WWE) aged 18 to 44, the authors used a questionnaire that asked about practices during the preceding month.
Of the women, 53% reported being sexually active, compared with previous reports of 82% of women in the general U.S. population. Of the sexually active WWE, 74% used contraception, but only about half used highly effective methods, compared with about 75% of women in the general population. One half of pregnancies were unplanned among both WWE and the general population.
