In 2006, the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) published a practice parameter for determining prognosis after cardiac arrest (JW Neurol Oct 17 2006, and Neurology 2006; 67:203). However, this guideline was based on patients treated with standard supportive care before the advent of induced mild-to-moderate hypothermia, a highly effective intervention that improves neurologic recovery.
To determine whether the current AAN guidelines are valid in patients cooled after cardiac arrest, investigators performed a single-center retrospective analysis.
