This was an open-label, noncontrolled study of occipital nerve stimulation for the preventive treatment of chronic cluster headache (CCH) that was considered medically intractable because of failure of or intolerance to at least four of the more commonly used preventive medications. Participants were the first 14 patients offered a destructive trigeminal nerve procedure or bilateral, occipital nerve stimulation with implanted electrodes; all 14 chose nerve stimulation.
The median duration of CCH at the time of implantation was 6 years (range, 2–17 years); median follow-up was 17.5 months (range, 4–35 months). Twelve patients used the stimulation continuously, and two used the stimulation intermittently — one because of dislike of occipital p…
