Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most prevalent dementia worldwide. Although treatment remains focused on memory and cognitive decline, these changes are often accompanied by aggression, psychosis, and mood alterations that are frequently treated with antipsychotics. A recent meta-analysis suggested an increased mortality risk with short-term use of antipsychotics (up to 12 weeks) in patients with dementia. To examine the mortality risk from longer-term use, researchers conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 165 patients with AD residing in nursing homes in England.
