Prevailing research criteria for study subjects with behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) mandate five core features and describe numerous supportive features that are not required for diagnosis (Neurology 1998; 51:1546). Core features include (1) early insidious onset and gradual progression, (2) early loss of insight, (3) early emotional blunting, (4) early impairment in regulation of personal conduct, and (5) decline in social interpersonal conduct.
