Patients with dystonia can present with profound motor abnormalities, but their anatomic correlate has been obscure. Recently, investigators using sophisticated MRI techniques have identified clues to the relevant pathology. One technique, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), is based on the diffusion of water within a given body structure. Normal white matter orients water diffusion, and when the white matter is altered, the degree of orientation might change. The DTI also allows for determining the course and health of white-matter tracts.
