A 33-year-old woman complains of recent onset of numbness and tingling on the inner aspects of her legs, as shown (image). She is otherwise healthy and has no neurological complaints other than the numbness. She works as a computer technician and enjoys horseback riding; she recently bought a new horse. On exam, she has no abnormal findings, except for the numbness in the legs, and she has normal quadriceps strength and active knee and ankle jerks. When the area near the medial knee is compressed, she reports experiencing tingling in the leg below the knee.
