Neurocognitive deficits are, unfortunately, common in patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) treated with radiation and chemotherapy. Several studies have suggested that whole-brain irradiation is associated with neurotoxicity and cognitive decline in this patient population. To determine neurocognitive and quality-of-life (QOL) outcomes of methotrexate-based chemotherapy without whole-brain irradiation, researchers studied 21 patients who were long-term survivors of PCNSL after this treatment. Of the 21 patients, 13 underwent assessments of seven neurocognitive domains and QOL before treatment, 3 to 4 months after treatment, and at a median of 100 months after treatment.
