The alien limb phenomenon is characterized by a patient not identifying one of his or her limbs as part of his or her body and by the limb making movements without the patient sensing that they were willed. Several types of alien limb exist. In diagonistic dyspraxia, one hand performs actions contrary to actions performed by the other hand (intermanual conflict). The anarchic or wayward hand performs goal-directed movements that the person does not perceive as voluntary. The levitating hand elevates without an obvious goal. Successful medical therapies have not been described.
