As part of an ongoing revision process of their 2007 framework for new research criteria for Alzheimer disease (AD), the ad hoc International Working Group for New Research Criteria for the Diagnosis of AD has produced this lexicon of AD. The lexicon is intended to provide the research community with “a framework of the disease that covers its full spectrum” while offering clinicians some guidance regarding biomarkers of the disease.
At the most basic level, the lexicon distinguishes the clinical disorder Alzheimer's disease from the well-known neuropathological hallmarks of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, termed Alzheimer's pathology.
